The material category helps organize your options, but the technical sheet decides whether a grout belongs in your project. A dry backsplash, a daily-use shower and an exterior tile installation place different demands on the specification. Start with the application, then compare named products.
Put the project facts on one page
Record the tile material, surface location, approximate joint width and whether this is new work or a repair. Include unusual conditions such as steam use, standing water, exterior exposure, heated floors or intensive cleaning.
For an existing installation, ask who will identify the old grout and confirm that the replacement method is suitable. If a fact is unknown, keep it visible in the brief. Guessing the material from its colour can lead the comparison in the wrong direction.
Cement grout: read beyond the category
Cement products vary in formulation and instructions. Do not choose by a blanket sanded-versus-unsanded rule without checking the actual product's approved joint sizes and tile compatibility.
As one example, Polyblend Sanded Grout is a polymer-modified cement product with defined preparation, mixing and curing requirements. Its sheet describes compatible penetrating sealer as an optional additional treatment. Other cement products may have different requirements; the proposal should identify which applies.
Epoxy grout: examine the whole use case
An epoxy option may be proposed for its stain resistance or maintenance characteristics. Ask about the specific formulation, installer experience, cleanup process and suitability for the existing tile.
LATICRETE's SPECTRALOCK PRO Premium is a multi-part epoxy example that does not require grout sealing. Its datasheet also lists application and cleaning limitations. Product claims therefore need to be read with their conditions, rather than translated into “maintenance free.”
No grout upgrade should be used to avoid investigating a leaking shower. That same manufacturer expressly distinguishes epoxy grout from a waterproofing membrane.
Ready-to-use grout: packaging does not establish approval
A ready-to-use pail can simplify preparation, but it does not tell you which wet applications are allowed. Request the exact product name instead of accepting the description “premixed.”
For example, Fusion Pro's current technical sheet allows specified shower applications and requires no sealer, while excluding steam rooms and submerged installations. It is a polymer-based single-component example, not evidence that every premixed product has those permissions.
Compare the practical tradeoffs
Ask each proposal to answer the same questions:
- Is the product approved for this tile, joint and exposure?
- What preparation is required for the existing installation?
- What downtime and cleanup will the work need?
- What care, stain-response and repair instructions follow?
Compare total project scope, not the price of a bag against a pail. Access, removal, protection, labour and the agreed finish are separate quotation inputs. Avoid assuming a product marketed at a higher tier automatically resolves the condition causing your repair.
Keep movement joints in the specification
The selected grout should not automatically fill every connection. Designated movement joints need their own detail and compatible flexible material, such as those described in CUSTOM's tile-silicone guidance.
Finish the selection with written product names, colour references and applicable Canadian documentation. These examples explain differences; confirm the exact locally supplied version before ordering. Use the materials and finish guide to connect the material decision with colour, sealing and the final handover.
