See the layers. Understand the job.
A tile surface is a connected assembly. Explore the parts, then see why a surface repair cannot answer every question underneath.
Conceptual bonded-membrane assembly. Layers are separated and thicknesses exaggerated. Drain, seams, penetrations and movement details are omitted. This is an explanation, not a construction drawing.
01 / Tile — the wearing surface
Tile provides the visible surface. Its material, finish and texture influence cleaner compatibility, grout choice and maintenance. Tile itself does not establish that the entire wet-area assembly is waterproof.
Five parts. Different responsibilities.
The illustration shows one conceptual bonded-membrane assembly. It separates the layers so their functions are easier to understand. The actual product system may include different components and detailing.
Surface cleaning changes what is on top. Regrouting replaces joint material between tiles. A sealer helps with stains on compatible surfaces. Moisture control depends on the approved water-management assembly, including its joints, drain and penetrations.

| Material | Its job | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cementitious grout | Fills specified field joints between tiles. | Joint range, sand/aggregate, tile compatibility, mixing and any sealing recommendation. |
| Epoxy grout | Reactive-resin joint material with product-specific chemical and stain resistance. | Mixing proportions, working time, cleanup, tile suitability and exposure approvals. |
| Ready-to-use grout | A product category with different proprietary formulations. | Drying requirements and approval for showers, steam, submersion or exterior exposure. |
| Penetrating sealer | Helps reduce staining on compatible porous grout or stone. | Whether it is needed; compatibility, application and residue removal. |
| Silicone / movement profile | Accommodates movement at designated joints and transitions. | Specified joint location, geometry, backing, compatibility and cure. |
Material categories are a starting point. Read the complete comparison and the exact manufacturer’s instructions.
