Choose grout, colour and sealer as one specification

How to compare material options without assuming all grout products or sealing requirements are interchangeable.

A grout name, colour number and technical sheet are more useful than a promise to use a “premium” product. For a repair, the specification also needs to account for the tile already installed, the shape of its joints and the way the room is used. Keep those details together when comparing options.

Start with the actual application

Describe whether the surface is a dry backsplash, a shower wall, a shower floor or an exterior installation. Include tile dimensions, approximate joint width and any known special conditions, such as a steam shower or heated floor. If you do not know the material, say so rather than choosing a product from a photograph.

Cement, epoxy and ready-to-use products should be compared by their individual instructions. Even within one category, permitted applications can differ. As an example, CUSTOM's Fusion Pro technical sheet excludes steam rooms and submerged applications. An approval for ordinary shower use should not be stretched to a different environment. Ask for a sealer decision

There is no useful universal schedule that says every grout must be sealed every year. Some products do not require sealing; others allow or call for compatible treatments under their own instructions. The proposal should identify the actual grout and explain whether a separate sealer forms part of this project.

For its Polyblend sanded grout, CUSTOM describes an optional compatible penetrating sealer for additional protection. That is a product instruction, not a rule for every cement grout. Ask how the selected treatment affects appearance and which cleaners should be used afterward. Polyblend technical sheet

Make the colour choice in the room

Prepare a shortlist, then request a physical example against the actual tile. Look at it with the room's normal lighting and with the surrounding paint, cabinetry and fixtures visible. A phone screen can help choose a direction, but it should not be your only approval reference.

For partial repairs, define the acceptable outcome before work. Are you looking for an unobtrusive patch, a consistent wall or a new colour across the entire room? Ask whether the installer expects a visible transition between existing and new work, and whether the boundary can be placed at a sensible edge. Record the approved colour and area in the quotation.

Include the other joints

Designated movement joints need their own specification. Ask which corners, perimeters and material transitions are included, and whether their proposed colour and sheen have been reviewed alongside the grout. A carefully chosen grout colour can still look unfinished if these connections were left outside the conversation.

Request a practical care handover

At completion, keep the grout and sealant names, colour references, maintenance guidance and return-to-use instructions. Ask separately about foot traffic, shower use and cleaning, because they are different exposure conditions. Follow the actual product's curing requirements; do not rely on a generic promise of next-day use.

For Canadian projects, confirm the locally supplied product and current Canadian documentation where available. Product families and names can evolve. A complete specification gives you a better basis for future maintenance than a leftover colour swatch alone.
